I know I might have a habit of saying this a lot, but this time I mean it from the bottom of my heart. You NEED to watch "On Air" by Edu G. It's directed by Mutesh and Mbingi and you can stream it at onair.suncity-radio.com. The whole team, from the cast to the backstage and lighting pros, it's clear that everyone played their role and did so well. I started thinking that the story sounded a bit familiar as the movie went on until it got to a point where I saw a clip from the news that aired the story, and then I was sure.
Tagged "The most dangerous broadcast in history," it's a feature film that's based on a true story. The story made the news, and it's from 2011 when a suspected gangster found himself trapped in a house where he was cornered by police.
Everything
You can be sure that you'll be on the edge of your seat regardless of the genre of movies you prefer. That's because there's a lot to appreciate; the cast's dedication to their roles, the flow of the script, and the analysis of the story from a different point of view than what we saw on the news. Everyone (those who aren't scared of showing their age) should share their thoughts on this for sure; because I found it enriching and beautiful to see a different point of view of a story that rivetted the nation.
It's okay to get criticism for any work of art, and this was the case here as well. One of the attendants at the filming pointed out that the ending left a few unanswered questions. This opinion is a bit subjective, I think, because for me, the ending was perfect- not dragged out to the point that the original plot gets lost, but detailed enough to give closure- especially to people who identify with the running theme of the movie.
Just Everything FR
In addition to getting thrown in the middle of the tense situation where the suspected criminal makes a call to the radio station, we're also treated to a close view of the radio station's crew. As the movie starts, the main star, Rango (Matayo Randu who hosted Matwana Matatu Culture Season 1), receives a cryptic text message on his phone alluding that the sender would release some sensitive information about Rango's past by noon if he doesn't come clean about it himself.
He goes on with his day as usual, facing challenges that involve family and more, until he finally ends up at the radio station where he works. As the clock ticks on his own problems, the unexpected caller reaches out on a call during an interactive segment of the show. This causes a disruption at the station, with patience and trust being tested amongst the radio crew. The plot thickens, with all the details coming together to put both viewers and cast in a tough spot.
I was really happy to have interacted with the actors, actresses, writers, directors, and everyone else who attended the screening. They did an amazing job, and we discovered that for almost every one of them, it was the first time they saw the finished product. They shared that they were proud of what they'd done, and they honestly should have been. I mean, the cinema gave a standing ovation and hearty claps at the end of the film. The Court of Commons tends to be very honest when the environment is neutral, so that's enough said.
