WICKED (2024): The Review As It Premiers

"It is a great film for everyone who believes in friendship and love. Both of these would help you defy gravity, for sure," Tana Kioko said when asked about the crowd she would recommend this movie, Wicked to after a private screening at Century Cinemax, Two Rivers.

Indeed, Wicked is already pronuncified as the greatest musical of its time. That, plus the fact that it is a fantasy movie so well done—presenting top-notch CGI better than what we’ve seen in counterpart films, although they may not be musicals per se.

It is important to point out that Wicked would be great not only for people who enjoy musicals but even more so for those averse to them. This is because, you see, this film offers musicality with an edge. Viewers who swore they hated musicals ironically loved this one.

"For some reason, I did not get the ick factor in the scenes where they were singing because they hit every note right—it wasn't over the top," a viewer who asked to remain anonymous said. "All the songs matched the corresponding scenes. It really wasn’t too much; it just felt right."

The characters are very intriguing. They’re so well-portrayed that it’s difficult to point out the main character between Elphaba Thrope, played by Cynthia Erivo, and Galinda Upland, played by Ariana Grande. Their lives are so intertwined that one doesn’t go without the other.

The film focuses on how they navigate their unlikely friendship. Although their personalities clash and there’s a constant shift between them—villain to heroine, heroine to villain—that dynamic is precisely what makes it refreshing. It’s a presentation that’s easy to relate to: good people aren’t always good, bad people aren’t always bad, and everyone has reasons for their actions, even if they’re inconvenient for others.

This is why the theme of friendship is more articulate than ever before. Add the delivery of light humor, which got the entire cinema squicking with laughter, and you have something special. Glinda is hilarious the whole time, and has several moments when she is being oh-so-iconic.

Most importantly, the film delivers an empowering message about recognizing your potential, standing up against evil—even if it’s perpetuated by people you once looked up to—and defying gravity.

And like that, you have a nerve-wracking movie that is also kid-friendly. So, purpose to watch Wicked as it officially premieres in cinemas today. Don’t leave the kids behind. You better be ready to be thoroughly entertained.
